2 hr program. Modules cover Screening and Brief Intervention skills:

  1. Brief and Effective Substance Abuse Screening: How screening for substance abuse can improve patient outcomes.
  2. Brief Intervention and Other Treatments: Brief interventions in primary care.

2 hr program. Modules cover Referral to Treatment skills + Opportunity to Practice skills via simulated cases:

  1. Referral to Treatment and Follow-up Care: Options for specialty treatment, planning and arranging substance abuse treatment referral.
  2. SBIRT In Practice!: Three interactive cases give a chance to practice skills and clinical decision making.

4 hr program. Modules cover all SBIRT skills + Opportunity to Practice skills via simulated cases.

SBIRT Core Program: What Will I Learn?

Using case-based learning, you will learn:
  • How to select and utilize tobacco, alcohol, and drug use screening tools
  • How to perform brief interventions for tobacco and substance use problems
  • How to refer patients to the appropriate type of substance abuse treatment center and/or specialist
  • How to follow-up with and reassess patients who receive treatment for substance abuse or tobacco use
  • Integrate the skills you learn by practicing them via interactive mini-case scenarios in each module. In the final "Practice" module, you will have the opportunity to integrate and practice all the SBIRT skills learned in parts 1 and 2 in an interactive case.
  • Helps prepare hospitals to comply with new Joint Commission Substance Abuse Measures and Tobacco Treatment Measures!

Nursing Program: What Will I Learn and How Much Does It Cost?

  • How to perform brief, supportive interventions for patients who are interested in quitting tobacco

You will have opportunity to take an optional, non-credit module on how to obtain Reimbursement for tobacco interventions.

Motivational Interviewing

1 hr program. This module was developed to introduce and demonstrate basic motivational interviewing techniques for primary care, techniques that have been used effectively to motivate people with alcohol, tobacco, and other substance abuse problems to change their behavior.

Goal: To teach primary care providers and medical students basic motivational interviewing techniques to motivate patients who are experiencing alcohol use and other addiction problems.
